Get your kids to LOVE poetry with Vintage Poetry for Modern Kids

We have been incorporating more of a Charlotte Mason-style approach to our homeschool this year. One of the things that we have added is poetry and I just wanted to share the book that we’ve been using as it has been really great for us!

The book is called Vintage Poetry for Modern Kids: 52 Classic Works and Hands-On Projects to Delight Students Throughout the Year and you can find it on Amazon. You may be able to find a used copy for a better price or you may find it at another bookstore for an even better deal!

It has numerous classical poems by many different poets and they are organized by the seasons of the year. There are also various suggestions to help study the poems more in-depth. We usually spend about 4 weeks on each poem and the activities that go along with them. The kids really enjoy doing the hands-on activities as well.

The current poem we are working on is called ‘October’s Party’ by George Cooper.

The different activities actually help the kids to think about the poems and the poet’s perspectives which helps them to build many valuable skills. I have seen that it has helped some of the kids with their grammar and creativity. These activities have definitely improved some of their writing skills as well. A lot of the activities can also be used to help fill ‘gaps’ in your curriculum as we have used some of them as art projects and handicrafts.

We will probably be using this book for the next couple of years as there are so many poems and activities in it. If you are working with older kids you could probably work through it at a faster rate and add in some more activities. We also try to look up a short biography about the poet so we can include them in our Book of Centuries. If you are looking for a way to include poetry in your homeschool studies then I encourage you to pick up a copy of this book!

God bless!
