Which Calendar Did I Choose?

If you saw the updates to the previous post, then you will know I was having a hard time making a decision about which calendar to use.

Both of them had things I really liked, the vertical one was easier to find a place to put and I really liked the layout.

Biblical Feasts: Celebrating Sukkot as a Christian

Please note that I am NOT an expert on the BIBLE or on any of the BIBLICAL FEASTS, but I know others are feeling led to celebrate the FEASTS as we are, so I am just sharing what we have been learning. This post, like many of my posts, is a helpful reminder for myself and a place to put links that I might otherwise forget about.

Who should celebrate the Seven Biblical Feasts?

Well, that is a debate among many, and I have been doing TONS of research. During that research, I read somewhere that we are not commanded to celebrate them, but we are invited to celebrate them as Jesus did. How would you feel if you had invited someone to celebrate with you and they didn’t show up?

First and foremost, I would say that you need to pray and see if GOD is leading you to celebrate… you should pray about any big changes in direction before heading down a path that life may be leading you down.

Holy Days vs. Holidays

I have read some theories that Thanksgiving may have actually been based on the Sukkot Celebrations… it lasted three days while Sukkot lasts for seven, so there may be some truth to this. They both occur around harvest time, and Thanksgiving was a harvest celebration when it first started. The Pilgrims were well versed in the Bible and Hebrew, so they may have adopted this celebration as a time to remember all they had been through.

Why celebrate Sukkot?

Secondly, you should do your own research about Sukkot. Find out the who, the what, the when, the where. the why, and the how… all of it! Then you can decide if and how you want to celebrate it. You can start by reading through Leviticus 23.

A Walk Through the Garden

A walk in nature always amazes me and reminds me that we serve an awesome GOD! We are surrounded by his love and mercy but often we get so caught up in life that we don’t see it or feel it.

We are so blessed to have an abundance of nature in our own backyard and garden… this reminds us our of creator every day.

It makes me ponder how amazing the Garden of Eden must’ve been… I’m sure that our garden can’t be anything close to that but it can be a place where we can talk to God and feel his presence as He surrounds us with His love. The burdens of this world melts around us when we allow ourselves to take in all of His glory.

Household Routines File Set Up: OVERVIEW

It’s that time of the year when we start thinking about resolutions for the New Year and many times they involve getting things to run a little smoother.

I’m going to share with you a file system that we had set up a couple of years ago and we still refer back to it every now and then or when things seem to have gotten a little off track.

We had a similar system set up many years ago and it really helped me get my house in order. We felt like we were always running behind and never getting caught up but our routine system helped us get and stay more organized.

I recently heard that routines have been proven to help you be more productive and less stressed as they lessen the number of decisions you have to make on a daily basis… it definitely helps us!

Rosella: Florida’s cranberry

We have loved growing this plant and we have enjoyed trying it out in many different dishes… plus it is so pretty!

Just wanted to share this article about Rosella.

Green Gardening Matters: Roselle: Florida’s cranberry
— Read on greengardeningmatters.blogspot.com/2021/11/roselle-floridas-cranberry.html

We had a bountiful harvest before Hurricane Milton and it looks like we might have another smaller harvest soon.

Click HERE to see our Garden Progress on YOUTUBE!

We were able to make 8 pints of jam… 2 have been eaten already! I used the recipe from the Self Sufficient Me site to make the jam.

If we harvest more then I would like to dry or freeze some to use for tea. I think a rosella/lemongrass blend might be nice!

Have you tried Rosella? If so, please let us know what you think and share your favorite recipe for it in the comments below.

Hurricane Helene … please pray

Hey there!

Just wanted to pop in here real quick to ask everyone to please pray for all of those in the path of this major storm.

It’s quite scary looking and although it’s only a Category 2 at the moment it is forecasted to be at least 3 and possibly a 4 at landfall. The storm surge is being called ‘unsurvivable’… not something I’ve heard before.

Landfall is predicted to be sometime tonight… exact area is still unknown but everyone is preparing for its arrival.

There are multiple areas that have been under mandatory evacuation… these places have never had this happen before so this is telling us a lot already.

The calm before the storm.

Our area will be on the east side of the hurricane which is called the ‘dirty side’. This means that we will feel the effects of the wind and rain but we will not have a direct hit.

Some forecasters are predicting that the outer bands will be just as devastating as the hurricane itself… quite a scary thing to think about.

The rain that this brings will cause massive widespread flooding. Florida has been getting a lot of rain already so the ground is saturated which means we may lose a lot of trees as well. This means there will be widespread power outages.

There are likely to be lots of tornadoes as well… these are not very predictable and can cause massive damages. Many counties have already had tornado watches and warnings.

This hurricane is also predicted to head north all the way up towards TN… I can remember the effects we had from Hurricane Hugo (Cat 5) when I lived up that way and it was pretty bad then.

This storm is HUGE and its impacts will be felt all over the southeastern United States… please be sure to get your supplies ready NOW and evacuate if you need to … don’t wait!

Please take just a moment to say a prayer for everyone in its path.

God Bless you all and we pray that you stay safe!

Chicken Salad Tostadas

This recipe came about during a pantry challenge night… we were using up some leftovers and things that needed to be eaten from the pantry. I have incorporated several of these pantry challenges into our Perpetual Meal Plans to help us use up things in the fridge so they don’t go to waste!

We had made some chicken salad from some leftover baked chicken for lunch and still had plenty left over. There were also some soft avocados, refried beans, and some old corn tortillas that needed to be used up. (I had bought them for a different recipe and never made it.)

Mr. Awesome just kept layering things on his tostada and it was so GOOD that we will definitely be repeating these! Tostadas can be made with so many different things so don’t be afraid to get creative and make your own version!

Our 2024-2025 Homeschool Curriculum, Schedule Plans, Resource Links, and Daily Routine – Lots of FREE resources!

It’s that time of year again for us… time to get the next school year planned out. We finished up our 2023-2024 school year before Easter and I’ve been busy gathering supplies and making schedules as I coordinate with everyone for vacations, holidays, and special trips that we have planned.

It is always SO TEMPTING to take a few months off to just focus on this house but I know from past experience that this doesn’t go well and that it takes FOREVER to get a couple of the kids back into the school routine. You can read more about last year’s curriculum and routines HERE.

We switched to more of a Charlotte Mason-style approach and it was GREAT for the most part. We still have a couple of kids who just hate anything to do with math so that’s been a little challenging but we’re making progress. We’ve also really enjoyed using some of the FREE courses with Under the Home Homeschool.

All-In-One Homeschool Portfolio Notebook Printables – Updates

Now I will share about the Homeschool Notebooks. We did use a similar system many years ago but I couldn’t find the post where I had shared them before so I decided to make a new post with some updates and some new printables.

You do not need to print these out but you can use them as a template for putting together your own notebooks or you can print them out and use them in binders… whatever works for you. We have done both of these in the past and I will try to post some pics of what our current notebooks look like once we get them put together.

Get rid of the socks… not just the stinky ones!

Another quick tip for helping to control that Laundry Monster and keep things neat and tidy in the kids’ rooms is to get rid of the socks! I’m not talking about just the stinky ones, the mismatched ones, or the ones that have seen better days and I’m not saying to get rid of all of them.

You may want to consider getting rid of some of them though as it has been found that some people will tend to procrastinate on doing their laundry until they are out of socks and/or undies. If you only have a set amount of socks then you would, in theory, need to wash clothes more often. If you have more socks than clothes then you may, in theory, also buy more outfits which results in more clothes that have to be dealt with.

2024 – 2025 Homeschool Planning

There are so many ways to go about planning out a school year but this is the easiest way I have found for me to do this as we don’t use any one site or curriculum. I am usually gathering materials and ideas throughout the year so I try to jot them down or put them in a special place until I am ready to sit down and plan out what we would like to use.

This year I used the ‘Arts of a Balanced Home Education’ List from Brightly Beaming Resources as a guide for helping me to plan… it went along well with a lot of the Charlotte Mason ideas I have been trying to implement in our routines.

Keto Fried Chicken

One of Mr. Awesome’s most talked about memories of his Granny is about her Fried Chicken and he loves it when his mom brings over Fried Chicken… on the other hand, I can take it or leave it. When we started eating healthier the idea of giving up his favorite fried foods was almost a deal-breaker until I came up with a recipe that didn’t require a ton of special ingredients and that tasted almost as good as the ‘REAL’ thing… if it’s got Mr. Awesome’s stamp of approval then you know it’s got to be GOOD!

We like to use the chicken with the skin on but this would also work with boneless skinless chicken or chicken tenders… just adjust the cooking time. This recipe is similar to the recipe that we use for the Fried Gizzards so you might want to check those out too! While I’m not particularly crazy about Fried Chicken, I can eat my weight in Fried Gizzards… no jokes!

These are the measurements that I use but sometimes I do have to make extra breading mixture up. That’s ok though because I just add a little to the bowl for the chicken and then store any leftover breading or pork rinds in the freezer which makes it easy to fry up a quick snack when we want one later on. If you don’t care for pork rinds you can just omit this step in the recipe.

Our favorite seed and plant sites

We all know that I’ve been a bit hyper-focused on the garden situation here… I may have gone a wee bit overboard but that has not been confirmed yet.

I just recently made a couple of more orders for seeds and plants… there are so many things that I want to try and I’ve really been trying to limit myself to a few new things every month but sometimes there are deals that are just too good to pass up or things that are only in season at certain times. There are also a few items that we are waiting to be restocked so we have to grab them when they become available or we won’t get them at all… so much to keep track of. I like using the ‘Diary’ section of the Gardenate app to help me keep track of some of these things.

Crazy Delicious Low-Carb Substitutions You Can Make Today!

Are you trying to eat healthier but having a hard time finding recipes? Well, there is a secret that we use here and that is that we often try to use our favorite recipes but we make substitutions to make them a bit healthier.

The other issue is that a lot of the foods that are marketed as ‘Low-Carb’ and ‘Keto’ are full of mysterious ingredients and SUPER EXPENSIVE. If you are trying to eat healthier then they shouldn’t be charging you more to fill you with more JUNK! Remember that just because the label says it is HEALTHY doesn’t really mean it is!

Many of the substitutions we make are things that can be found easily in the produce section or canned food aisle of any store or we can even grow a number of them in our gardens… that sounds better to me. If you can’t have your own garden then you can still shop for seasonal veggies to make substitutions with and you will save a bit of money… maybe you can even check out the local farmer’s market for fresher veggies?

Easy Sourdough Quiche

Our new Spring meal plan has quiche in the breakfast rotation. This is a wonderful dish that could be eaten at any time of day or for any occasion… maybe even an Easter or Mother’s Day brunch?

Mr. Awesome’s Mom, Granny, makes an amazing quiche and she wrote the recipe down for me but I was a little confused about the directions so I improvised and it turned out pretty good… he says it is very close to Granny’s. The original recipe calls for Bisquick which I don’t keep in my pantry but I do have plenty of sourdough so I used that instead and just adjusted ingredients until it ‘felt right’.

This has quickly become a favorite in our home! I believe her recipe says to sprinkle a little cheese in the bottom of the casserole before pouring everything in but we haven’t tried that. This is also great as leftovers and you may find that you need to make two of them to keep everyone happy! We do leave the mushrooms whole so that the pickier kids can pick them out pretty easily but you could chop them up. You can also add any other veggie or meat that you like.

Spring is in the air!

We can see the signs of Spring all around us as the fruit trees and bushes are starting to bloom, the birds are nesting, and our animals are having little ones. We can also see the pollen everywhere but it reminds us that everything is starting fresh and new for the year and it is kind of exciting.

One of the things that the kids always look forward to are these Empty Tomb Rolls at Easter. Since I’ve been studying more about the Holy Days vs Holidays I’m not sure how our Easter will look as I am really leaning more into a Passover celebration. These will still be great to help teach the kids about the resurrection while spending some quality time with them.

Finding Peace Through Routines

I had planned to write this post earlier, but I’ve been a bit busier than expected. It’s better late than never, right? We have had a lot going on, but I haven’t stressed. I have had an unusual sense of CALM and PEACE that I haven’t felt in a long time, so I really want to share what works for our family.

I read something earlier today about stress, worry, and anxiety coming from feeling like we don’t have control over the future… guess what? No one has control over the future… we have to trust in GOD and surrender those feelings to HIM. When we do this, we will become rooted in HIM, and HE will give us PEACE.

Now, this doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t plan for the future, or neglect our responsibilities, but we should release the stress of them to GOD. We can rest in the assurance that HE is in control, and HE will do what is best for us. We need to make sure that we are taking care of all that HE has BLESSED us with, and do our best to model HIS love to our families and all of those around us.

The Proverbs 31 woman shows us some of the ways that she modeled this attitude. We can strive to be more like her in our lives. I am working on a study for this!

First thing, I want to remind you that everyone’s home and family are different, so what works for me or someone else may not work for you. However, if you take some of what works for me and tweak it for your family, I truly believe you will find a bit of peace in your routines.

A long time ago, I made a file card system to help keep our chores organized. I then expanded that to include other areas of our lives to keep me from forgetting important events. It also helps me to think about things beforehand so I can better prepare for them. Am I always prepared for things that happen unexpectedly? No, but I can usually pull something together pretty quickly to accommodate changes because of the routines that we already have in place.

Household Routines File Set Up: OVERVIEW

As I said, household chores were a BIG challenge for me at one time in my life. Part of that was that someone I was with insisted that a spotless house needed to be my TOP PRIORITY… things have since changed for the better, and we are not around this person anymore. This system came about as an effort to find a balance between a clean house, a garden, and my kids. It was very successful at helping us get the things completed as they needed to be, and I no longer had to fight any LAUNDRY MONSTERS.

The next biggest challenge I faced was the ‘What’s for Dinner?’ dilemna. Thankfully, that question was included in the daily routines that I had created with our previous system, but I needed to work on it a bit. I started meal planning, which helped me develop a better grocery shopping routine. Previously, I had just gone to the grocery store with no real plan, and shopped for my usuals and then just tried to make them last through the month. If something unexpected came up, I didn’t have a plan for it.

Biblical Feasts: Key Dates for 2026

Unlike holidays, where the dates usually fall at the same time every year, Holy Days are not set dates. I always have to check the Jewish calendars as the Biblical Feasts vary according to certain signs like cycles of the moon and sun, which I have no way to accurately calculate. The dates can vary, depending on the calendar you use, as the Jewish dates usually begin at sundown the day before.

In Leviticus 23, the Feasts are mentioned, and there are numerous other mentions of them in the Bible. God has sent out our invitations, so we should accept them and celebrate these Feasts in gratitude for all that HE has done for us.

Here are the specific dates for the main festivals of the year:

You may notice that the Feasts fall in two different seasons, Spring and Fall. These also coincide with harvest times. Below are some of the links to posts that we have made for the individual Feasts:

A Look At January: Planning for a PEACEful Month

We’ve had quite the month already, and we aren’t even a week in yet, but it’s OK. There has been a sense of calm in our home, and things have been pretty PEACEful, which is our goal for the month.

I’m going to take a quick look at what we have planned for the month so you can get a little idea about how all of our systems work with each other.

Calendar

My morning routine means that I check our calendar every morning, and here is what I am looking at:

  • There are few appointments that are noted, and I have reminders set in my Cozi app. One appointment is this week, so I remind my husband about it to make sure he remembers.
  • There are a couple of birthdays, and I am noting the special meals in my planner.
  • A few ‘special holidays‘ that we would like to include.
  • Days that the public school will be out for one of the older kids.
  • I also try to look for a day that will be a good time to go to the flea market or produce market for seasonal produce.

Chores

I also like to review the chores at the beginning of the week, as we have them listed by daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly.

Daily chores are pretty automatic, but our monthly chores rotate by the day of the month… I try to keep things as easy as I can.

Some of our daily chores include:

  • Getting ready for the day – make beds, brush teeth/hair, get dressed
  • Animal/Garden chores – watering and feeding
  • Breakfast – see our Breakfast Routine here
  • Laundry – see our Laundry Routine here
  • Planning the day – check calendar, to-do list, meal plan, etc.
  • Morning Routine – see a sample day here
  • School
  • Lunch
  • Quick Clean up
  • Afternoon Chores – water animals, check eggs, etc.
  • Dinner
  • Clean up

If you click on the links, you can find more in-depth information about each task.

Some of my weekly chores are:

  • Home Blessings
  • Homeschool Planning – look for lessons ideas to go along with our monthly task and upcoming holidays
  • Menu Planning – check that we have everything we need for upcoming meals
  • Garden Planning – check what needs to be transplanted, seeded, started, and bought.
  • Other Planning – Valentine’s Day, Super Bowl?, President’s Day, income taxes, and possible outings/vacation; check for upcoming birthdays and anniversaries
  • Grocery Shopping & Errands
  • Desk Work/Paper Work/Bill Pay/Budgeting

Some of the monthly chores this week are:

  • deep clean the coffee maker
  • restock/reorder coffee supplies
  • declutter/organize coffee bar
  • clean out the lower cabinets
  • declutter/organize food containers
  • declutter/organize pantry
  • pull out any foods that need to be used up- work them into upcoming meals
  • deep clean stove top
  • clean stove hood
  • scrub high chairs

Some of the yearly chores for this month are:

  • take down the Christmas tree
  • check garden beds for any repairs needed
  • pruning anything that needs it
  • gather information for income taxes

Sometimes the kiddos are tempted to skip over chores, but it catches up to them later on when things break down or run out. We are trying to teach them important skills that they will need later on in life, skills that will hopefully make them successful in all that they do.

Homeschool

Today, I check my Homeschool Manager app for anything that I might not have added to the main calendar. I normally look over the next week’s schedule on Thursdays, after we finish our school work.

  • I note when we plan to start back.
  • I add the appointments to the monthly lesson plan calendar as well, so I can plan accordingly. I realize that I may need to alter our start date and just use that as a Home Blessing day to get the house back in order, so I just swap a few things around really quick.
  • I also go ahead and update the sites for our lessons so everything is set to go for Monday!

These quick changes will keep us from having a very frustrating week back to school… at least I pray it will.

This month, I will be focusing on adding Biblical-based Financial Literacy tasks to our homeschool routine, so I will look over those tasks to see what I can work in with our lessons.

Financial Literacy (January)

We work on our family budgets and get our Bills organized in January, so it just makes sense to use this as a teaching moment for the kids.

Some ways we are doing this are:

  • Biblical Stewardship:
    • teaching financial principles through a biblical lens
    • emphasis on the fact that EVERYTHING we have belongs to GOD
    • learning to FAITHfully manage our resources
  • Budgeting & Generosity
    • researching what the Bible says about charity, giving to the poor, and tithing
    • creating budgets that allow us to give to others in need
  • Bible verses related to contentment, greed, money, and giving

Bill Paying

I usually sit down to pay bills on Fridays.

  • Pay the bills due, pay more if money allows
  • Check accounts to see what payments have cleared, and highlight them on the worksheet
  • Note any bills still left to pay

I usually do this first, so I know what I have left to spend. My bill pay worksheet makes things much simpler as I can see what I have paid, and what needs to be paid.

Meal Planning & Grocery Shopping

I normally do my menu planning on Wednesday or Thursday. I print out a couple of meal planning sheets and a grocery list so I can fill them in as I look over our Winter Meal Plan.

  • I write in the birthdays and special holidays for the month, and then add those ingredients to the grocery list. Clicking on the link will give you a ready-made list of holidays for the month and links to recipes and menu ideas to make them special.
  • I look over the planned meals and pencil them in.
  • I note the days when we have appointments and swap those meals for easier meals, if needed.
  • I check the grocery list that the kids have been filling out on the fridge, and add items to the main list.
  • I also check my pantry restock list to see what I need to add to the list, if money allows.
  • I make sure I have the ingredients to preserve the produce that I plan to pick up this month as well. I will add supplies to the grocery list, if needed. Some of these posts have not been published yet, but you should be able to find the printables in the library.
  • I will either schedule a time to go shopping or place an order for groceries and set a delivery or pickup time that works for us. When I go to town, I usually plan to take care of several errands at once.
  • At the beginning of the month, I will also place a Sam’s Club order for bulk supplies to be shipped, as well as any supplies we need from Amazon.

Special Holiday Meals: January Edition

Some of the pantry restock items I added to list are:

  • Honey/Syrup
  • Flour
  • Jelly
  • Peanut Butter
  • Toilet Paper

Some of the produce I’d like to buy for preserving:

  • Broccoli/Cauliflower
  • Dry beans for canning

If money is short, we can skip the restock and the preserving items until next month. I don’t like to skip things to often, but we do have our pantry pretty well stocked, and as long as we replace what we use, we should be fine.

Garden & Animals

I usually try to get feed and garden supplies once a month to cut down on the number of trips I make to town. The feed store is in the opposite direction of our normal grocery store, and I need all the space in the back of the van for feed, so I can’t really combine these tasks, or I would.

I go out to the greenhouse and garden just about every day, so I keep a running list of things that I need. I will also check my monthly list of tasks that need to be done. I went over my lists this weekend, and I have:

  • placed online orders for seeds and plants
  • ordered some new garden beds
  • made a list of seed starting materials that I need to pick up.

I need to:

  • get some seeds started for the Spring
  • get the heater hooked up in the greenhouse
  • transplant some of the cool weather crops out to the garden beds
  • replace the broken beds with the new beds
  • order mulch/soil for the new beds
  • sift the vermicompost to make potting soil for the new seeds

Some of the tasks are also listed with my yearly tasks to make sure that I don’t forget them 🙂

I also check with the kids to see what animal feed we have, check that against my master inventory list, note down what we need in my phone, and then I will make time to go get the feed. I try to combine a few tasks during the same trip.

When I go to get the feed I will:

  • get feed and animal supplies
  • pick up seeds or plants at the Farm Center – I did grab a few seeds
  • check with the nursery to see what they might have available – I didn’t stop this month
  • stop at the grocery store, if there is anything we need before the next grocery order
  • fill up with gas on the way home

When I get home, I always have the kids unload the feed right away, mix anything that needs to be mixed, and put the surplus in the old freezer that we use for storage. Once the feed is taken care of, they will clean out the back of the van 🙂

I try to make sure to do this mid-week, as Fridays & Saturdays are a bit crowded at the Feed Store. It’s always a bit stressful when we get too low on feed as well, so by making sure we have a regular schedule, we can alleviate some of the stress and replace it with PEACE, as we know we have what we need.

To-Do List

I also like to start a To-Do List because things always pop up that I can’t fix right away. I also find things when I am out in the garden that need to be taken care of I will usually snap a photo and then add it to the list if it can’t be taken care of right away.

This is our list so far:

  • Master Bathroom
  • build new garden beds
  • add solar lights to chicken coops
  • finish chicken tractor
  • hang cameras
  • put the StarLink on a pole

It isn’t too long yet, but it will grow longer the further we get into the year… hopefully, we can stay on top of it.

This is just a quick look at my weekly plans… I have all month long to work on some of them, and I will try to knock out as many as I can. I know that by handling the smaller things now, it will free up time I might need in the future for BIGGER and BETTER things. A little maintenance helps to keep things running nice and smooth… it also helps us to appreciate all that we have been BLESSED with.

I pray that you will find something useful in these links.

God Bless!
