Are you trying to eat healthier but having a hard time finding recipes? Well, there is a secret that we use here and that is that we often try to use our favorite recipes but we make substitutions to make them a bit healthier.
The other issue is that a lot of the foods that are marketed as ‘Low-Carb’ and ‘Keto’ are full of mysterious ingredients and SUPER EXPENSIVE. If you are trying to eat healthier then they shouldn’t be charging you more to fill you with more JUNK! Remember that just because the label says it is HEALTHY doesn’t really mean it is!
Many of the substitutions we make are things that can be found easily in the produce section or canned food aisle of any store or we can even grow a number of them in our gardens… that sounds better to me. If you can’t have your own garden then you can still shop for seasonal veggies to make substitutions with and you will save a bit of money… maybe you can even check out the local farmer’s market for fresher veggies?
Beans in the Cupcakes??
You can substitute turnips, cauliflower, and sometimes even radishes for potatoes. Thinly sliced and sauteed cabbage can oftentimes replace noodles… we really love using spaghetti squash in place of noodles. We even use sauteed diced summer squashes in place of hashbrowns for breakfast and yes, I put beans in the cupcakes!
CAULIFLOWER/TURNIPS
Loaded Potato Soup – use a combination of turnips and/or cauliflower to replace the potatoes
Ultimate Mashed Potatoes – use cauliflower or turnips, just make sure to drain them well and decrease the milk
Smushed Taters – use a turnip in place of the potatoes
CABBAGE
SQUASH
FRIED FOODS
Bean Cupcakes
Hubby Approved Surprise Salted Caramel Cupcakes
SOURDOUGH
We also use a lot of Sourdough to make things a bit healthier although it isn’t technically low-carb or keto but we do use a long-ferment to make it better for us. Here are some of our favorite Sourdough Recipes:
Sourdough Bagels… so easy and delicious!
Homemade Sourdough English Muffins
Easy Sourdough Fruit Cobbler with sugar-free options
Sourdough Battered Squash Blossoms
Easy Peasy Sourdough Pancakes and Waffles
Sourdough Pumpkin Cinnamon Rolls
We’ve also found that substituting Monk Fruit sweetener for sugar has been a game-changer although the blends with Erythritol can leave a bit of a tingling sensation in your mouth but we have been experimenting with allulose although it is a bit more expensive. The one sweetener that we all LOVE is HONEY but you can definitely overdo it and it is 100% carbs so it definitely isn’t for a strict ‘KETO’ or ‘LOW-CARB’ diet. You just need to experiment with different products to find what you like and don’t like.
I hope that you can see that eating healthier is not really about sacrificing or spending real money… just try to eat real food that you enjoy! We have tons of recipes on our blog that are easy to make and can help you to eat healthier… not all of them are as ‘HEALTHY’ as they could be but we leave that to your discretion.
God Bless!
