Hey y’all,
I’ve been trying to write this post for a couple of weeks now but it seems that we’ve been getting hit with one thing after another around here lately.
My heart has been breaking over the pictures and stories from the aftermath of Hurricane Helene… I know that Mother Nature throws us curve balls and we can’t possibly prepare for everything that could happen but we really need to try to have the basic supplies on hand for whatever emergency might come our way.
When disaster strikes it really doesn’t take the time to find out if you are ready or not. It doesn’t care what is going on in your life, how much money you make, or what you might have planned… I don’t even know if I can put what I am feeling into words at this moment.
This has been a hard few days… feeling so blessed that our home and property were spared from major damage (from not one but two different hurricanes) but seeing others who have lost everything… it is such a humbling experience. For us, it isn’t just seeing the pictures on TV or Facebook…. we can travel just a few miles in any given direction and see damage or find roads that are still underwater.
There are so many people working together to help out the communities that were hardest hit. It’s so amazing to see everyone coming together to help out during this disaster but there is another not-so-pleasant side as well.
I’ve seen so many negative posts on social media … so much rudeness and nastiness towards other people… it’s totally uncalled for. We never know what that stranger next to us has been through. Please be gentle with those around you … disaster or no disaster!
We are praying for everyone who has been affected by these recent disasters. We are also trying to take inventory and assess how we did through these disasters so we can find our ‘weak points’ and address them before the next one pops up.
I always try to restock after a major event but the stores here have many bare shelves. We have been planting in our gardens for a fall crop but that will be a little while before those things are ready to harvest.
We did harvest some things before the last storm so we’ve been working through those and I still need to make some syrup or jelly with the Rosella. We do have a freezer full of meat so we are good in that aspect but one of the ‘weaker points’ that we have is our freezer… we do have a generator but that requires fuel of some sort. Gas was wiped out during our last hurricane due to major evacuations.
I encourage you to take a little time and put together an emergency plan and try to start stocking up on a few things. I do have a few posts on emergency preparedness that you can search for and I have had some others in the works so I’ll try to get to them as soon as I can.
God Bless you all!
