Howdy folks!
How have you been? It’s been busy here, as usual, and I’m writing this post a few months before it will actually publish so in real life I’ve just planted my winter garden. I’m pretty excited as this as I haven’t actually done this before but I am looking forward to having fresh veggies in the next month or two!
I love to garden so for me I don’t see this as part of a ‘prepper’ thing but for many people learning to garden is part of their emergency preparations. I am always looking for new suggestions on ways to better prepare our family for emergencies. We recently had two really bad hurricanes (Helene and Milton) that caused a lot of devastation in widespread areas.
Fortunately, we were not severely affected by either one but it did show us some ‘weak’ areas that we needed to fix. After Hurricane Debby (before Helene) we lost a freezer which made us realize that frozen foods would not be a very sustainable option in a long-term emergency.
While we aren’t supposed to live in fear I do feel that the Bible tells us to be prepared. Joseph helped Egypt prepare for the famine that was to come and helped save a lot of people.
I had started watching a video series by the Provident Preppers and thought others might find it helpful. Here is the link:
I like it when these challenges are broken down into bite-size pieces because it can make it so much easier to do. By narrowing the focus to one or two topics it also allows you to do your own research on what your best choice would be for your situation.
I know that finances will play a big part in some of your preparedness but I figured that with many people getting income tax returns right now, it might be a good idea to set aside a bit of that money for an emergency preparedness fund… don’t forget to set aside a little cash for times of emergencies as well as we have seen that cash is a necessity when the power goes down!
Being prepared can help you in an emergency and it can allow you to help others too. I can’t tell you how comforting it is to know that we have what we need to provide for ourselves if an emergency should happen. One good tip that we plan to implement in the near future is to shut the power off for a day or two and test your preparedness… cook food without your electric stove, wash your clothes by hand, do your normal tasks without the help of electricity and see what things would make your life a little easier.
Use your observations to help you with your preparations and start adding things to your supply now so that you have them when you need them! See if you can find people or classes to teach you the skills that you may feel like you are lacking when it comes to being prepared… or watch some YouTube videos and practice these skills until you feel comfortable with them. The more you practice a skill the easier it becomes and the more comfortable you will be to use when needed.
Just take it one step at a time and remember that you don’t have to have all the fancy gadgets… just the basics and then you can add to them as you feel the need! I do hope to be able to share a post about our personal emergency preparations here but for now I hope this post will help.
God Bless!
