I’ve definitely been trying to streamline things around here… in some ways, we need to look at our homes as a business and try to find ways to make things run a little smoother. I’ve had a master shopping list for a while although I’m not sure if I’ve shared it here. I might’ve been a little inspired by these vintage-style grocery boards**:

The problem with our previous shopping list was that it was outdated and our diets/tastes have changed quite a bit. I wasn’t quite as health conscious when I first made my grocery list so I did have things like Koolaid and Bisquick on there. We’ve also been growing some of our own veggies and making some of the convenience foods like ranch seasoning and onion soup mix so we don’t buy them anymore. We really want to try to grow some of our own herbs to make them even better!
I took a little time one evening while Mr. Awesome and the kiddos were out to look through our grocery purchases over the past year… yeah, it did take a little time to sort through the orders we have placed but it was worth it. I know the orders I went through didn’t show EVERYTHING we bought over the past year but it did give me a good idea of what we are buying regularly and how much we are buying. Some of those things were quite surprising!
When we did our pantry makeover, I really wanted to see just how much space I needed to dedicate to certain items before getting too happy with my organization.

Here are a few of the approximate totals of things we bought the most often for 2023:
- White Sugar (125 pounds)
- Monkfruit (50 pounds)
- All Purpose Flour (100 pounds)
- Bread (240 loaves – before I started making all of our bread)
- Canned Tuna (30 large cans)
- White beans (24 cans in the last 6 months – thanks to the Salted Caramel Cupcakes)
- Canned Greens (24 mid-size cans)*
- Canned Green Beans (20 large cans)*
- Mayo (35 jars!!)
- Peanut butter (25 large jars)
- Ranch (15 large bottles – before we started making our own)
- Jelly (12 jars- as we have been making some of our own jelly this year)
- Eggs (75 dozen – these chickens really need to start picking up some slack!)
- Shredded Cheese (45 pounds)
- Milk (48 gallons – I am really hoping to be able to start milking our goats next year!)
- Butter (25 pounds)
- Cream Cheese (24 packages – I really need to get back into making some kefir cheese to help with this cost)
- White Rice (50 pounds – we still have about 10 pounds in a bucket though)
- Chicken (Over 200 pounds! – We haven’t bought as much of other meats as we have some deer meat and wild hog in the freezer as well and we’ve been able to catch quite a bit of fish during the summer too. Hopefully next year we will be set up to process our own chickens.)
- Potatoes (Over 100 pounds! – we haven’t been eating as many potatoes over the past few months though so I’m sure that number might’ve been closer to 200 if we had.)
- We also bought a lot of Cucumbers, Lettuce, Tomatoes, Squash, and Cabbage… all things that we are growing or have been growing in our raised beds.
We have also bought a ton of other fruits and veggies this year as well as grown quite a bit in our raised beds. This list gives me a better idea of what we need to grow for next year and how much we need to grow. We can also keep an eye out for sales and try to grab things when they are in season so we can preserve them for later.
This is my older version:
This is my current grocery list where I have included a place for the items that I normally order from Sam’s Club and Amazon as well.**

Our current list reflects the items we buy regularly and need to keep on hand… more of a reminder for me to check these items when I plan a grocery run. Some of the items from my previous list are things that we now make almost 100% of the time like bread and ranch dressing. We don’t buy a lot of the snacks listed regularly but it is nice to have some on hand for unexpected guests and such.
Anyway, I’ve got to go finish up some sides to go with the pork that I’ve had in the crockpot all day… it sure smells good!
We hope you all have a blessed weekend!
