No catchy title line here… no time for that today as the kids and the dog have been WILD! I’m exhausted and it isn’t even lunchtime yet!
We are almost halfway through the first month of the year and I’m already behind on my garden duties! Granted, we have had some CRAZY weather here and the house remodel has taken first priority but things still have to get planned so we can try to have an even more abundant garden this coming year!

I’ve been working on some Planning Notebook pages soon but for now, I’ll just list some of the things I’ve been working on for the garden. I have been playing around with a new planning program called SEEDTIME. It really does seem like it will be quite the time saver as I’ve been keeping up with my gardening task on notecards in a small file system… quite cumbersome at times.

This has allowed me to put in some of the vegetables that I plan to grow and then it tells when I’ll need to seed, prepare beds, plant/transplant, cultivate, and harvest. It then organizes these tasks into a weekly list to help you stay on track… hence the reason I now know that I am a bit behind with my gardening. When I do get around to completing the tasks then the program will update the other dates and harvest times.
The calendar also provides me with the frost dates and times for my area and I can quickly see it at a glance. I can add succession plantings to the calendar as well to make sure that we can keep harvesting all season long… the great part is that it automatically calculates when I need to start/plant the seeds to be able to harvest at a certain time. Maybe we won’t have a huge harvest of pumpkins before the 4th of July this year … lol.
So far I have added the veggies that we use most often in our daily recipes as well as the ones I like to keep on hand in the pantry. This doesn’t have a feature, that I have seen, for adding in fruit trees or bushes but that’s ok as I know those are usually a little more permanent.

They have several other features like a layout, a journal for record keeping, a classroom with informational videos, and a store where you can purchase seeds and supplies. I haven’t had a chance to play around with these but the layout feature has me the most interested right now as I’ve really been wanting to get our property layout down so that we can start working with a goal in mind. This would definitely go a long way in helping me to determine where I want to put our fruits and berries.
This is honestly the first garden planning program I’ve used but it is pretty easy to get the hang of. I heard it recommended by others and then Justin Rhodes mentioned it during one of his latest posts and I decided to check it out. I’ve not been disappointed in it yet but I really haven’t had a chance to work with it a whole lot yet either… just wanted to pass this along in case anyone else has been looking for a program to help them with their garden planning.

I’ve been on a vintage kick and kind of taking the ‘old-fashioned’ term to a whole new extreme around here but I will say that I have been very inspired by some of the ‘Victory Garden‘ plots that I’ve seen in the past. They have me longing for my garden from many years ago but sadly I don’t think that is going to happen here as the gardening conditions here are totally different from there but we will work with what we have.

Victory gardens were encouraged during WWI and WWII by many governments and they were considered to be a patriotic duty to help with the food shortages many people were facing. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the term victory garden became very popular again as many people started to grow their own gardens again for various reasons. We have been gardening for a very long time… most of my life with a few years here and there when I didn’t live in a suitable place that allowed gardening. I was even using containers to garden before it became such a popular idea but that is neither here nor there because we need to focus on the here and now.

I definitely want/need to have a bigger garden and so far the plans for the garden have not materialized as the budget has had to be put towards other things like a washer, septic issues, home repairs, etc. We do have some leftover materials that will definitely be repurposed into some new beds… they may not last forever but they will do for now. Do what you can with what you have until you can do better!
