Our first Hobbit Day went well even though we had to postpone it once. We had planned to start with Breakfast at 7:00 on Saturday but we had overnight guests and a late night so it ended up being more like 7:45ish.
“Good morning! I’m not quite sure what you mean,” said Bilbo, “but my meaning was that I wish you a good morning, or rather, that it is a good morning whether I want it or not; or that you feel good this morning; or that it is a morning to be good on?” – Bilbo Baggins
Mr. Awesome got up early and put some meat on the smoker. He put a couple of lamb quarters on too as those would be used for the pot roast later on.
Hobbit Day Menu Plan

“I wish I was at home in my nice hole by the fire, with the kettle just beginning to sing!”.
Breakfast
The quiches had been made the night before … silicon cupcake liners were perfect for this! The fruits had also been washed and prepped the night before so breakfast was just a matter of making the biscuits, frying bacon, arranging the fruit tray, and warming up the quiches.

“I wish it need not have happened in my time,” said Frodo. “So do I,” said Gandalf, ‘and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us”
Second Breakfast
We cleaned up from that and rolled right into Second Breakfast… Mr. W was loving this and we have a feeling that he will be requesting a day of meals like this for his birthday!

I didn’t make the honey cake as I had planned as I found some bakery items marked down… I also found some fried apples in a can. The apples weren’t as good as homemade but nobody complained.
I also didn’t buy any orange juice as it was almost $8.00/gallon here! We had some other juices and hot tea with our breakfasts.
Once breakfast was over we took a few minutes to rest and then a quick cleanup as we had used disposable plates.

Elevenses
At 11:00 it was time for ‘Elevenses’ which consisted of starting some water for tea, and putting some cookies on the trays. We had all of these trays from previous events so they really came in handy.
The lemon cake bars and chocolate chip cookies were made the day before and some of the other items were found at Aldi. We also put out some fresh fruit for everyone to enjoy and enjoy they did!

To be honest…. I didn’t even want to think about any more food at this point but the celebration must go on!
“If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world” – Thorin Oakenshield
Luncheon
Unfortunately it was a rainy day so there weren’t any picnics outside under the garden arches 😦
While I worked on the potato soup, most of the kiddos went outside to play before it started raining again.
We had prepared the chicken salad the day before and I had found some bakery croissants marked down… postponing the celebration actually saved me some time, money, and effort!

The potatoes for the potato soup had already been peeled and covered with water. They were waiting in the fridge for me … this really is a pretty easy meal to prepare.
Mr. Awesome also pulled some meats off the smoker to eat with lunch… so much food!!!
After Lunch the little kids settled down for some quiet time and a movie while the older kids and I did a quick clean up.
I also got the smoked lamb put in the crockpot for a version of the Mississippi Pot Roast. We will start Dinner prep around 4:00ish.

Afternoon Tea
The little kiddos finished their Quiet Time around 3:00 and we have the Afternoon Tea and snacks ready.

The hot funnel cakes were quickly devoured and everyone made their favorite cup of hot tea to drink with a couple of cookies.
“Home is behind, the world ahead, And there are many paths to tread… Then world behind and home ahead, We’ll wander back to home and bed”
Dinner
The kiddos went back out to play after tea and I got to work on dinner. Big brother made some amazing French fries… I’ll have to type up the recipe soon so I can share it.
We also had some fried green beans and stuffed mushrooms. I pulled out the platters for this meal because there was so much.

I did forget to start the sourdough so we just had buttered bread and leftover biscuits with dinner but I don’t think any noticed.
“It’s a dangerous business, Frodo, going out your door. You step onto the road, and if you don’t keep your feet, there’s no telling where you might be swept off to” – Bilbo Baggins
Supper
I had planned to make Blackberry Dumplings for Supper but ended making a Blackberry Sonker the night before… we used a mixture of store bought and home grown berries. It was so good even though I burned the top a little bit 🙂

Everyone was pretty stuffed so they ate a little bit of this meal but we kept it in the fridge so people could snack on it as they felt.
“Remember everything that happened: the good, the bad… and how lucky I am that I made it home
Conclusion
This was so much fun but it was tiring! I think this would be a fun group/family idea is you had different people bring the different meals… like a potluck meal!
Will we do this again?
Most definitely! The kids had a blast and we really enjoyed ourselves. We got to eat a lot of things we don’t normally eat and it was a treat!
Most importantly though, we created memories that we all will cherish for a lifetime! It was as much a ‘Hobbit Day’ celebration as it was a celebration of ‘Our Family’ and enjoying time together.
Whether this is a tradition you want to start or not, remember that you are writing a story for your family to remember… a story that will be retold in the future … let’s try to make it full of wonderful memories!
God Bless!
“His house was perfect, whether you liked food, or sleep, or work, or story-telling, or singing, or just sitting and thinking best, or a pleasant mixture of them all. Evil things did not come into that valley”.
We’ve tried to show the ‘pretty pics’ but there were some messies ‘behind the scenes’ as memories were being made 🙂
