5th Saturday Weenie Roast: A Memorable Family Tradition

Some of our favorite memories from North Carolina were from the 5th Saturday Weenie Roasts that our church would have. It was so much fun to gather ’round an open fire and roast hot dogs (and marshmallows). The kids all played until they couldn’t play anymore, and everyone feasted on the potluck dishes that were brought. It was definitely a time of fellowship that we will cherish forever in our hearts.

We haven’t found anything similar to that here, but I was determined to keep that tradition alive so we would have our own version of 5th Saturdays at home. Sometimes friends and family will join in, but sometimes it is just us, and that’s ok.

An added benefit is that you and your kiddos will get comfortable cooking on an open fire, and that could come in handy during an emergency or power outage!

Question Of The Day

How do you like your marshmallows?

Personally, I like mine burnt (D) and smushed between a couple of graham crackers with some chocolate… best eaten on a cool night beside a warm campfire. Continue reading “Question Of The Day”

Campfire Day

Campfire Day is the day we can set aside to relax and unwind by a campfire! Click here to learn more about this holiday. It is celebrated on the first Saturday in August.

I think I might be the perfect time to plan a Weenie Roast! We might need some of these for roasting our hot dogs and marshmallows for S’mores. It might also be nice to have some campfire songs and stories too.

Below are some of the activities I found to celebrate this day:

S’mores Dip

This was another recipe that I made for the Chili Dog Dangle Dance that we had on June 9th for the Silver Fox Squares. I did not find the graham cracker sticks mentioned in the original, I did, however, find some Scooby-Doo snacks which looked like doggie treats, so I decided to just use regular graham crackers and they worked out fine.

I found this recipe on my Facebook feed. Click here for the original link. Continue reading “S’mores Dip”

March 19-25, 2017 Meal Plan

This is our basic meal plan for the week. Sometimes we will switch the days around if I forgot to set something out or put something in the crock pot. Please feel free to use this or change it around to suit your family’s needs.

I do have ‘Snacks/Desserts’ listed as well. I always try to keep a bowl of fresh fruit out on the counter or table for the kids to snack on. Sometimes I will make a special snack or treat for us to enjoy.
