May 14 – May 20, 2017 Meal Plan

This is our basic meal plan for the week. Sometimes we will switch the days around if I forgot to set something out or put something in the crock pot. Please feel free to use this or change it around to suit your family’s needs.

I have started trying to do easier meals on days that I have square dancing obligations. This helps me to be able to put a nice meal on the table without feeling guilty about having some much needed ‘Mommy Time’. Some of these meals may also help with those that have busy or irregular schedules due to work or extracurricular activities.

I do have ‘Snacks/Desserts’ listed as well. I always try to keep a bowl of fresh fruit out on the counter or table for the kids to snack on. Sometimes I will make a special snack or treat for us to enjoy.

March 29, 2017

Hey there everyone! I hope you all are doing well. We are doing pretty good here. The weather has been extremely nice, not too hot and not too cold, and we have been able to enjoy the outdoors a bit.

Life has been busy, as usual, and a bit crazy at times. I can’t believe how fast time flies. It seems like only a week or two ago that I decided to go to my first square dance class but it has been a little over 8 weeks ago! I have learned so much and so much has changed. That one decision has literally been a life changing event for my family and me.

This week especially has been and will be very busy. We’ve already been to two dances and we have two more to go to not to mention that we have our special April Fool’s Dangle Dance on Saturday. Square dancing is so much more than just dancing around and listening to the caller yell ‘Do-si-do’ and ‘Swing your partner’. It is a lifestyle! It encompasses so many different aspects of life that I can’t even begin to touch them all right now.

I am just learning the basics of everything but a lot of square dancing goes back to the basic courtesies and manners of old. It is such a pleasure to see, well at least for me it is, the men taking charge and the ladies following their lead. I know, I know, a lot of people wouldn’t agree that that is the way things should be but we are all entitled to our own feelings and beliefs.

Square dancing is also good for you in so many ways! It is a great form of exercise for all ages and it can also help with memory issues and mental clarity. I have always tried to do my exercising but sometimes I’d get bored by doing the same thing again and again. Other times certain things would bother my joints or hurt my back. I don’t have these issues when I am square dancing.

We are always doing something different too and just when you think you know what the caller is doing he’ll switch it up on you! It really helps to keep your mind sharp and makes you focus on what he is saying so that you can be sure to catch the call. Then the fact that some of the calls aren’t used as often as others makes you pull from those memory banks to remember the rules so you can execute the call properly. I like to be challenged from time to time and I definitely get that while dancing.

Then there is the social part of it. I am usually a very shy person and that make it hard for me to meet and make new friends. I have met so many new people since I’ve started dancing and it has been so much fun.  There are a variety of different people and it keeps thing interesting. I always have a good time and my face is usually sore after a night of dancing because I laugh so much! Everyone seems to have a good time everywhere we go. Then more often than not people hang around after the dance to talk and sometimes we all go out to eat afterwards. Talk about fun!

I have seen some people really come alive after a visit or two with the groups. Some of the people are lonely after a divorce or the passing of a loved one and they just want to be around other people. Maybe the kids have all moved out and they just feel kind of lost. The dancers are all so welcoming and friendly that it is almost impossible for anyone not to feel genuinely ‘at home’.

Can I also say, without revealing too much, that not all dancers are part of a couple. Sometimes you will find a single dancer at a dance and who knows what could the future could hold if you are single yourself?

Square dancing is also good clean fun, plain and simple. Sometimes that is hard to find anymore. Not only that many clubs are a big part of the community and do their part to help out wherever needed with benefit dances and such. I have heard many stories of square dancers coming together to help fellow dancers after house fires or other unexpected circumstances. It makes my heart smile to hear these stories time and time again.

Unfortunately square dancing seems to be a dying tradition. I am hoping that we can bring it back to life though.I can see the possibilities it could hold for many families who long to find family friendly activities that everyone can enjoy and be a part of. I know that I do plan to introduce my kids to it in the near future and get them involved in it as well.

I encourage each of you to check it out. Maybe you know someone, a friend, a neighbor, or maybe a parent, who could benefit from a little extra movement, who needs some new friends, or maybe someone who just desires to feel like they are a part of something.  Square dancing is for all ages so don’t ever feel like you are too old or too young to try. I know that it won’t be something for everyone but at least you could give a try and see what happens.

Well, today is our only free day this week so I have a few errands to run while the kids are down for naps. I still have a few things to finish up for our upcoming dance and a couple of things to get ready as far as my outfits go for the next couple of days. I will be taking my older daughter along while running errands for a little mother/daughter time too. (We are going to try and check out the new ‘Five Below’ store in town.)

This afternoon will also be ‘fun day’ with the kids. We will probably do some arts and crafts and I have already gotten the stuff for some root beer floats this evening. The kids are excited about the upcoming dance as they have seen some of the decorations and I have promised to give them some of them after the dance. Not to mention they want to have their own little ‘party’ with whatever Momma has left over.

I hope you all have a wonderful week and weekend! Be sure to check out the Silver Fox Squares on FB and our new page on WordPress. We are also on Twitter @SilverFoxSquare. All of the pages are still in the baby stages but we would appreciate a like and/or follow.

Thank you and God Bless!

Good morning everyone! I was so exhausted this morning I slept through my alarm so I’m still sitting around in my ‘bump around’ shorts and a T-shirt… not the norm for me at all. That’s OK though. Everyone has had a yummy breakfast and some of the kids are reading, one is playing with legos, and another couple are watching some Saturday morning cartoons.

A lot of the area schools have been on Spring Break here. We did do some school work this week but it was kind of hit and miss as some storms and bad weather had our internet on the fritz. That’s a downside to living out in the country. We did however get a surprise visit from a friend we haven’t seen in awhile.  It’s always a joy to have old friends come and visit. I find it amazing how kids can just pick right up where they left off months ago.

This past week has been a bit busy as Momma had 3 dances to go to! Monday, Tuesday, and Friday. It has all been so much fun! Monday was my first ‘away’ kind of event and there were a lot more dancers than I normally see. They had the chance to earn a ‘dangle’ for dancing a tip while holding an ice cream cone! There are so many interesting things that they do at these dances!

Tuesdays are the normal class nights and it is amazing to see how far everyone has come as a class. I am so looking forward to graduation and learning new calls and styles. There is so much to learn I have said it is almost like learning a second language. The great thing is that you don’t have to learn it all and you get as advanced as you like or feel comfortable with. Personally I want to learn as much as I can and I want to learn the fancy stuff that goes along with the basic stuff too. I find square dancing so fascinating!

Then Friday night was a St.Patrick’s Day dance. I love parties, especially decorating and putting them together. This time, however, I only brought a few decorations and some Key Lime Cookies (Betty Crocker box mix). I also wore one of the vintage dresses I found on Etsy. It was so cute! Everyone wore green and brought all kinds of green refreshments. Most importantly though we all had a wonderful time. There was a new class starting up also and we are hoping to have more people come next week. I encourage anyone and everyone to check out the classes that may be offered in your area.

Today we are planning a small cookout with family and a few friends. I need to get my lazy self into the shower so I can get to the grocery store and pick up a few things. I am so glad I did that big monthly grocery shop earlier as my weekly shopping trips have been sporadic.

God is so good! Try to remember that He makes no mistakes and He has a plan for each and every one of us. If we will only let go of the plans we have and let Him take control He will bless us and work wonders in our lives that we could never have imagined! I try my best to thank Him everyday, several times a day, for all the blessings He has poured out on us and for all the ways He continues to work in our lives. I pray that each and everyone of you can look back on your week and see how God has blessed you and touched your lives.

May God bless each and everyone of you!

I have to smile at the title to the this post. This was a very good day and probably one of the most enjoyable days I’ve had in a very long time!

For those of you who don’t know what ‘yellow rocking’ is, it is a square dance call where the dancers will hug another dancer, usually their corner. What/who is a corner? For me it would be the person standing to my right. Continue reading “No yellow rocking at the checkout!”

February 12, 2017

It’s been a little while since I’ve done one of these posts but I have thought about doing one several times. I’ve got several drafts saved but it seems that I just can’t find the time to work on them or I’ve lost the idea when I go back to it.

Let’s see, where to start? Well, we’ve been busy with school work and just normal everyday life activities. We’ve also joined a rock painting group and the kids are having a blast painting rocks, hiding rocks, and finding rocks. (I may try to do a post later on about some of our activities with the rock painting.) I’ve tried to post some of our activities on Instagram and on our Facebook pages. I’ve also started a Facebook page for this blog.

I have been going to the square dance classes every week and having a blast! It is so nice just to get out of the house and be around some other ‘grown ups’ every now and then. The dancing is a lot of fun too but the fellowship is wonderful.

I just absolutely love square dancing! Yes, I have two left feet sometimes and I mess up on the calls but I have so much fun. I just can’t stop smiling when I’m dancing or watching others dance. Have I mentioned the outfits? They are so beautiful too! Gosh, I just don’t think there is anything about square dancing that I don’t really like at all.

I know it’s not for everyone but we all need to find something that we can enjoy. This just happens to be something that I really enjoy right now. It makes my heart happy which could be why I can’t stop smiling! Be forewarned as I may do a post, or two, on square dancing later on.

Can I just say also that God works in mysterious ways? I want to thank anyone and everyone who has prayed for myself and my family. I have been so blessed and His blessings continue to pour out on my family and me in so many different ways. It is a joy to see how He comes through time and time again.

I am also reminded of how important it is to remember that He will provide us with what we need in His perfect timing, not ours. I’m smiling as I type this because I am still in a state of awe at what He has done in my life this past week. All I can say is that my heart has been smiling and that smile has been visible on my face all week long!

When we think something is impossible He will prove that everything is possible when you hand it over to Him. He knows the desires of our hearts and He knows what we need before we even ask. When He takes something from us He will replace it with something so much better. Every trial and heartache that we go through is to prepare us for something that is yet to come. He is molding us and shaping us into the person He wants us to be. He is so good to us!

So please, if you have a problem, a need, or just something that you desire don’t be afraid to hand it over to God, no matter how impossible it may seem. Let Him have control over it and let Him be the one to decide what to do or how to do it. You will be amazed at what happens when you release your worries and cares.
