This story has been on my heart for a very long time. Seeing the recent attention given to decisions public figures have made about the lives of unborn children gave me the encouragement I needed to finally complete this project. My hope is that sharing a little of Shyanne’s story will offer parents and children helpful information in a simple, relatable way—and bring comfort to families who are facing the fears that can come with an unexpected diagnosis, something we understand all too well.
There is a quiet, beautiful truth our family has carried close for the past six years: faith can walk right beside fear, and hope can remain even when we do not know what comes next.

When our sweet daughter Shyanne was born, our world suddenly filled with unfamiliar medical words, hospital rooms, and a long list of complicated diagnoses. From the NICU to heart surgery, from hydrocephalus to a courageous battle with acute myeloid leukemia, her journey from birth to age six has included some incredibly difficult chapters.
And yet, through every hard moment, there has also been an abundance of love, a joy-filled spirit that shines brightly, and the steady reminder that Shyanne is fearfully and wonderfully made.
For years, I have wanted to help bridge the gap between sterile medical terms and the vibrant, beautiful heart of a child. I wanted to create something that could comfort parents walking a similar path, help siblings understand medical equipment without fear, and encourage children to see the person beyond a diagnosis.
Today, with a heart overflowing with gratitude, I am so thankful to finally share her story with you.
Introducing: Sweet Shyanne: The Little Girl Who Could

Sweet Shyanne: The Little Girl Who Could is a heart-centered children’s story about courage, kindness, faith, and the beautiful truth that it is okay to be different. Written in a gentle, child-friendly voice and paired with heartwarming watercolor illustrations, it turns complex diagnoses—including Down syndrome, AVSD, Dandy-Walker malformation, and chemotherapy ports—into ideas that young hearts can begin to understand.
This is not a story that promises easy answers overnight. Instead, Shyanne’s journey offers medically complex families something deeper and more comforting: the reminder that hard things can be real while peace, joy, and love are still present. It invites children and grown-ups to discover hope in the middle of uncertain seasons.
Included Inside: A Caregiver’s Guide
Many special-needs parents know the tender, vulnerable feeling of being out in public when a curious child asks a loud question about our child’s medical equipment or appearance. Those moments can feel uncomfortable for everyone involved.
Because I wanted this book to be a practical and caring resource for families and communities, I included a bonus section at the back: A Caregiver’s Guide: Navigating Curious Questions with Grace.
This guide is written for parents, siblings, and teachers. It offers gentle scripts, practical suggestions, and a child-friendly vocabulary word bank to help adults respond naturally when questions arise. Rather than shushing curious children out of embarrassment, it helps turn those moments into opportunities for empathy, inclusion, and connection.

A Note on Our Artwork (AI Transparency Disclaimer)
The illustrations inside Sweet Shyanne: The Little Girl Who Could were created with the help of custom AI generation tools, lovingly guided and refined by our family to reflect Shyanne’s real-life likeness, personality, and journey.
Because childhood medical journeys can move quickly through sterile hospital rooms and unexpected diagnoses, it isn’t always possible to capture those moments perfectly with a camera. Utilizing AI technology allowed us to transform real memories, medical equipment (like her G-tube, VP shunt, and chemo port), and her favorite stuffed sloth into a gentle, consistent, and beautiful watercolor storybook world.
Every image was carefully curated to ensure that Shyanne’s bright spirit and resilient heart shine through on every single page, bridging the gap between medical terms and a child’s imagination.
We pray this little book helps nurture greater understanding and acceptance for people with disabilities.
God bless!
