All Aboard! How to Host a Magical Polar Express Party at Home
Simple ideas, sweet traditions, and one complete planning bundle to help you create special memories your family will treasure.
There’s something magical about Christmas through the eyes of a child.
The excitement of wearing pajamas to a party, receiving a golden ticket, enjoying a cup of hot chocolate, and settling in for a special movie can turn an ordinary evening into a memory that lasts for years.
Over the years, our family has enjoyed creating our own Polar Express celebrations. We’ve welcomed little passengers aboard, decorated graham-cracker trains, played games, enjoyed delicious treats, and gathered together for a cozy movie night.
And while those celebrations have been filled with special touches, I’ve learned something important along the way.
You don’t have to spend a fortune or plan an elaborate event to create magical memories.
You just need a little creativity, some simple preparations, and the people you love.
That’s why I’ve put together our Pollywog’s Place Polar Express Planning Pack, a complete printable party bundle inspired by our family’s celebrations.
But first, let me share some of our favorite ideas for hosting your own magical evening!
You can see some of our previous posts HERE.

1. Welcome Your Passengers Aboard!
One of my favorite parts of a Polar Express party is welcoming the children with their very own golden tickets.
Have everyone arrive in their favorite pajamas, and ask a family member to play the conductor.
As each guest arrives, the conductor can punch their ticket and welcome them aboard.
It’s such a simple activity, but the excitement it creates is priceless!
You can even arrange chairs like train seats, add Christmas lights, and play festive music to set the mood.
2. Create a Magical North Pole Atmosphere
You don’t need expensive decorations to transform your home into a winter wonderland.
A few strands of twinkling lights, cozy blankets, and some decorations you already own can make a big difference.
One of the fun additions we’ve used for our celebrations is a Northern Lights projector. It adds a beautiful glow to the room and helps create that magical feeling.
A welcome sign, hot cocoa station, and a few coordinating decorations can complete the scene.
Pollywog’s Place Tip: Shop your own home before buying anything new. Reusing decorations and borrowing supplies can help keep your party budget under control.
3. Let the Children Decorate Graham-Cracker Trains

One of our favorite Polar Express party traditions is decorating little trains made from graham crackers!
Set out graham crackers, icing, and assorted candies, and let the children create their own edible train masterpieces.
This activity is always fun because every train turns out a little different.
For younger children, you can assemble the trains ahead of time and let them focus on decorating.
And don’t forget to take pictures of their creations!
We’ve also made ginger bread houses, decorated cookies, made candles, and other crafts through the years.
4. Plan Some Fun Games and Activities

While everyone is gathering, it’s nice to have a few simple activities available.
One of our longtime favorites is the candy-count guessing game.
Fill a clear jar with wrapped candies and let everyone guess how many are inside. The person with the closest guess wins a small prize.
You can also include word searches, coloring pages, and other quiet activities before the movie begins.
There’s no need to plan an entire afternoon of complicated games. Choose a few favorites and let everyone enjoy themselves.
5. Don’t Forget the Hot Chocolate!

Of course, no Polar Express celebration would be complete without hot chocolate!
Set up a simple cocoa station with marshmallows, whipped cream, chocolate sprinkles, and a few other favorite toppings.
You can make it as simple or fancy as your budget allows.
Serve your cocoa with popcorn, cookies, and other easy treats.
If you’re hosting a larger gathering, consider serving a simple supper before the movie.
Remember, the food doesn’t have to be complicated to be enjoyed.
6. Settle In for the Movie

Once the games are finished, the trains are decorated, and everyone has enjoyed their treats, it’s time for the main event!
Gather the blankets, dim the lights, serve the hot chocolate, and enjoy The Polar Express** together.
This is the moment when all those little preparations come together.
And it’s also a wonderful reminder that sometimes the best family traditions are the simplest ones.
