Scripture — Ecclesiastes 3:1 KJV
“To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:”
Welcome back to 31 Days of Prayer for Estranged Family and Friends—a journey of surrender, healing, forgiveness, and restoration.
Today is Day 29.
We are nearing the end of our 31-day journey.
Yesterday, we talked about growing forward instead of trying to go back.
And today we’re going to surrender something that may be one of the hardest things we’ve carried throughout this entire journey:
Our timeline.
Maybe you’ve prayed for reconciliation and thought:
“Surely by now something should have changed.”
Maybe you hoped they’d call by your birthday.
Maybe you thought Christmas would bring everyone together.
Maybe you believed that after you apologized, they’d respond.
Maybe you began this 31-day journey quietly hoping that before we reached the end…
something would happen.
And maybe it has.
But maybe it hasn’t.
Today’s Scripture reminds us:
“To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven.”
So today we’re going to pray:
“Father, I release when.”
When Our Prayer Becomes a Deadline
Sometimes without realizing it, we give God a deadline.
We say we’re trusting Him…
but somewhere inside we’re thinking:
“Surely this will happen soon.”
Then another week passes.
Another month.
Another birthday.
Another holiday.
And disappointment begins creeping into our prayers.
“God, why haven’t You done something?”
“How much longer?”
“Haven’t I waited enough?”
Those are honest questions.
God isn’t frightened by our questions.
But sometimes we need to recognize that our desired timeline and God’s purposes aren’t necessarily the same thing.
And there’s something else we need to remember:
Another person’s heart and choices are involved.
We cannot put a deadline on someone else’s healing.
We cannot schedule their forgiveness.
We cannot decide when they’re ready to talk.
We cannot rush their growth simply because waiting is painful for us.
So today…
we release the calendar.
Waiting Doesn’t Mean Nothing Is Happening
One of the hardest things about waiting is that it can feel like nothing is happening.
But our garden has been teaching us differently from the very beginning.
Remember the mustard seed?
When we first put a seed into the soil, there was a period when we couldn’t see anything.
If we had looked at the pot and said:
“Nothing is happening,”
we wouldn’t necessarily have been right.
Something may have been happening where we couldn’t see.
The seed was taking in moisture.
The outer covering was softening.
A root was beginning to emerge.
Growth often begins hidden.
Now, we cannot assume that God is secretly changing another person in exactly the way we hope.
But we can know that waiting doesn’t have to be wasted.
Because while we’re waiting…
God can continue working in us.
What Is God Growing in This Season?
Maybe we’ve spent so much time asking:
“When will this relationship change?”
that we’ve forgotten to ask:
“God, what are You teaching me right now?”
Look at what we’ve practiced during this journey.
Surrender.
Forgiveness.
Prayer.
Patience.
Guarding our words.
Releasing bitterness.
Respecting boundaries.
Listening.
Humility.
Trust.
Maybe you began this journey believing the primary goal was for God to change the relationship.
But perhaps you’ve discovered that God has also been tending your heart.
And that work matters regardless of what another person chooses.
You don’t have to postpone your growth until reconciliation happens.
You can become more peaceful now.
More prayerful now.
More forgiving now.
More rooted in Christ now.
Your life does not have to remain on hold while you wait.
Don’t Turn Day 31 Into a Deadline
And because we’re almost at the end of this devotional, I want to say something especially important.
Please don’t make Day 31 a deadline for God.
This isn’t:
“31 days of prayer, and then my relationship will be restored.”
Prayer isn’t a formula.
We aren’t planting 31 prayers so that God owes us a particular outcome on the final day.
This journey has been about bringing our hearts before God.
Learning to surrender.
Learning to forgive.
Learning to pray for the other person.
Learning to recognize what belongs to us…
and what doesn’t.
Maybe reconciliation has already begun.
Praise God for every healthy step.
Maybe absolutely nothing has changed outwardly.
Then the prayers still weren’t wasted.
Because prayer is not only about getting the outcome we want.
Prayer is also about drawing near to God while we wait.
Returning to Our Garden
Let’s come back to our echinacea and mustard.
The echinacea reminds us of healing.
The mustard reminds us of faith.
But today I want you to think about seasons.
A gardener cannot command spring to arrive early.
We cannot stand over a seed and say:
“Grow faster.”
There is:
A time to plant.
A time to water.
A time to prune.
A time to wait.
A time for roots.
A time for flowers.
And sometimes…
a season when the garden appears quiet.
But a wise gardener learns to work with the season instead of fighting against it.
Maybe that’s our lesson today.
Don’t spend this season wishing so desperately for the next one that you miss what God wants to grow in you now.
Today’s Action — Release the Date
Take out your journal today and write:
“The date I wish this would happen is…”
Maybe you don’t have an exact date.
Perhaps it’s simply:
Soon.
Before Christmas.
Before another birthday.
Before another year passes.
Write whatever is honestly in your heart.
Then draw a line through it.
Not because you no longer hope.
But because you’re releasing the deadline.
Underneath it write:
“Father, I release when.”
Then ask a different question:
“What would You have me faithfully do in this season?”
Maybe:
Keep praying.
Keep growing.
Respect the space.
Enjoy the people God has placed around me.
Serve.
Plant something.
Make memories.
Spend time with God.
Keep living.
Today’s Prayer
Let’s pray.
Heavenly Father,
Your Word says:
“To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven.”
Father, You know how long I’ve waited.
You know every time I’ve wondered:
“When?”
When will __________ call?
When will we talk?
When will the misunderstanding be cleared up?
When will forgiveness come?
When will the door open?
When will this relationship be restored?
Father, I confess that sometimes I’ve turned my hopes into deadlines.
I’ve imagined when and how things should happen.
And when they didn’t happen according to that timeline, I’ve become discouraged.
So today…
I release when.
I release my calendar.
I release my expectations.
I release the milestones I’ve quietly turned into deadlines.
I release the pressure I’ve placed on myself.
And I release the pressure I’ve been tempted to place on __________.
Father, I cannot determine when another person’s heart will be ready.
I cannot schedule reconciliation.
I cannot rush healing.
And I cannot force a season to change.
So teach me to be faithful in this season.
If this is a season of waiting, teach me how to wait without putting my life on hold.
If this is a season of healing, heal me deeply.
If this is a season of silence, teach me to hear Your voice within it.
If this is a season of small beginnings, help me appreciate them.
And if reconciliation begins, give me patience not to rush what needs time to grow.
Father, keep me from assuming that silence means You have abandoned me.
Keep me from digging up the seed simply because I cannot see what is happening.
And keep me from measuring Your faithfulness by whether my circumstances change according to my timetable.
Most of all…
draw me closer to You.
If I have only mustard-seed faith today, let that little faith be enough to say:
“God, I don’t know when. But I trust You with today.”
I place __________ in Your hands.
I place our relationship in Your hands.
I place tomorrow in Your hands.
And today…
I release the timeline.
In the name of Jesus Christ,
Amen.
Before we finish, look once more at our garden.
The echinacea reminds us that healing has its season.
The mustard reminds us that faith doesn’t have to be enormous to keep growing.
And the garden itself reminds us:
Everything doesn’t bloom at the same time.
Maybe you’re in a season of visible restoration.
Maybe you’re seeing one tiny sprout.
Or maybe your garden still looks quiet.
Don’t make Day 31 your deadline.
Don’t make the next birthday your deadline.
Don’t make Christmas your deadline.
Keep your hope…
but release the calendar.
And instead of waking up every morning asking:
“Is today the day they come back?”
perhaps ask:
“Father, how can I faithfully love You and live well today?”
Because your life is still growing.
Your relationship with God is still growing.
Your purpose is still growing.
And even in the waiting…
there is still a season worth living.
Plant the prayer. Tend your heart. Honor the season. Release the timeline. And trust God with what comes next.
And as always,
may your roots grow deep and your spirit stay nourished.
God bless you, and I’ll see you tomorrow.
