Day 31 — God Is Still Writing the Story

Scripture — Revelation 21:5 KJV

“And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful.”

Welcome back to 31 Days of Prayer for Estranged Family and Friends—a journey of surrender, healing, forgiveness, and restoration.

Today…

is Day 31.

For an entire month, we’ve met here.

We’ve prayed.

We’ve opened God’s Word.

We’ve talked about wounds that sometimes hurt too much to put into words.

We’ve planted mustard seeds.

We’ve tended our echinacea.

We’ve watched things grow.

And along the way, we’ve asked God to tend something else too:

our hearts.

Maybe when you began this journey, you came with one prayer:

“God, please restore this relationship.”

And maybe today…

that is still your prayer.

That’s okay.

But perhaps something about the way you carry that prayer has changed.

Because this journey was never about discovering a formula that would make another person come back.

It was about learning how to place the person we love…

and ourselves…

into the hands of God.

And today He reminds us:

“Behold, I make all things new.”

Look How Far We’ve Come

Before we look forward, I want us to look back for just a moment.

Not at the estrangement.

At the journey God has brought us through.

During our first week, we learned to surrender.

We stopped trying to carry everything ourselves.

We asked God to search our hearts.

We surrendered the need to be right.

We gave Him the past.

We brought Him the ache of missing someone.

And we learned to stop striving.

Then we began tending the wounds inside our own hearts.

We chose forgiveness.

We admitted when we needed forgiveness too.

We uprooted bitterness.

We remembered that the person we love is not the enemy.

We put on the armor of God.

We released the what ifs.

And we asked God to guard our words.

Then our prayers began turning more intentionally toward them.

We prayed for their relationship with God.

For their wounds.

For their protection.

For truth.

For softened hearts.

For wise people to surround them.

And finally…

we simply prayed:

“Father, bless them.”

Do you see what God has been doing?

Little by little, prayer by prayer…

He has been teaching us how to love without controlling.

Then We Prayed for Restoration

During this final part of our journey, we began praying more directly for restoration.

We asked God to make a way.

We prepared our hearts for a conversation.

We asked Him to show us when to reach out…

and when to wait.

We learned that trust may need to rebuild slowly.

We prayed for hearts to turn toward one another.

We brought God the lost years.

We decided not to go backward…

but to grow forward.

We released our timeline.

And yesterday…

we opened our hands and said:

“Father, I trust You with the answer.”

And now here we are.

Day 31.

But I want you to hear this clearly:

This isn’t the end of the story.

What If Nothing Has Changed Yet?

Maybe you’ve prayed every day of this devotional…

and nothing outwardly has changed.

No phone call.

No text.

No conversation.

No apology.

No reconciliation.

Please don’t look at Day 31 and think:

“It didn’t work.”

Prayer isn’t a transaction.

We don’t pray for thirty-one days and then require God to give us the outcome we requested.

Instead, ask yourself:

Am I different?

Is there a little less bitterness?

A little more peace?

Have you learned to pray for them instead of rehearsing arguments with them?

Can you bless them?

Can you respect their boundaries?

Can you admit what belongs to you without taking responsibility for what doesn’t?

Can you hope without trying to control?

Can you say:

“God, I still want restoration—but I trust You with the answer”?

If so…

something has changed.

And What If Restoration Has Begun?

Maybe your story looks different.

Perhaps during these 31 days, something did happen.

A text came.

A conversation happened.

An apology was given.

A small door opened.

If so, thank God for it.

But remember everything we’ve learned.

Don’t rush the new growth.

Don’t expect one conversation to heal everything.

Don’t abandon healthy boundaries because you’re afraid of losing them again.

Don’t immediately try to recreate the old relationship.

Speak truth in love.

Listen.

Be patient.

Keep your promises.

Give trust time to grow.

And allow whatever God is building to become something new.

Returning to Our Garden One Last Time

Now let’s come back to our garden.

For 31 days, we’ve returned again and again to these two plants.

The echinacea.

A reminder of healing.

And…

the mustard.

A reminder of faith.

Think back to the beginning.

A mustard seed looks insignificant.

Tiny.

Easy to overlook.

But Jesus used something small to teach us something enormous about faith.

And maybe that’s what this month has really been about.

We didn’t plant certainty.

We planted prayer.

We didn’t plant control.

We planted surrender.

We didn’t plant a guarantee that another person would change.

We planted a willingness to let God change us.

And now?

We keep tending the garden.

Today’s Action — Turn the Page

Take out the journal you’ve been using throughout this journey.

Look back through it.

Read some of your prayers from the beginning.

Notice the things you were carrying.

Notice what God has shown you.

Notice where your thinking has changed.

Notice the prayers that are still unanswered.

Then turn to a completely fresh page.

At the top write:

“God Is Still Writing the Story.”

Underneath it write today’s Scripture:

“Behold, I make all things new.”

Then leave some space.

You don’t need to fill the entire page.

Because perhaps that blank space can represent something beautiful:

The part of the story that hasn’t been written yet.

At the bottom of the page write:

“Father, whatever comes next, help me walk through it with You.”

And then…

turn the page.

Our Final Prayer

Let’s pray.

Heavenly Father,

Your Word says:

“Behold, I make all things new.”

And today, on Day 31, I bring __________ before You once more.

Father, You know how this journey began.

You know the tears.

The questions.

The anger.

The loneliness.

The hope.

The fear.

And every prayer whispered when no one else was listening.

Thank You for meeting me here.

Thank You for searching my heart.

Thank You for showing me where I needed healing.

Thank You for teaching me to forgive.

Thank You for helping me release bitterness.

Thank You for teaching me to guard my words.

Thank You for reminding me that __________ is not my enemy.

Thank You for teaching me to pray for their good.

And Father…

thank You for teaching me to surrender.

I still bring You my desire for restoration.

If a healthy path toward reconciliation is possible, I ask You to make a way.

Turn hearts toward You.

Heal wounds.

Reveal truth.

Give us wisdom.

Prepare conversations.

Help us rebuild trust slowly.

And redeem what has been lost.

But Father, I no longer want to hold this prayer with a clenched fist.

I open my hands.

I release my timeline.

I release my expectations.

I release the ending I’ve written in my imagination.

And I trust the story to You.

If there are chapters of waiting ahead, walk with me through them.

If there are chapters of healing, heal deeply.

If there are chapters of reconciliation, give me wisdom to walk through them gently.

And if something unfolds differently than I imagined, keep my heart anchored in You.

Don’t let my life stop while I wait.

Help me keep growing.

Keep loving.

Keep serving.

Keep praying.

Keep planting.

And keep becoming the person You are calling me to be.

Father, I don’t know what happens after Day 31.

But I know this:

You are still God on Day 32.

You are still faithful.

You are still good.

You are still present.

And You are still capable of making all things new.

So I place __________ into Your hands again.

I place myself into Your hands.

I place the lost years into Your hands.

I place the future into Your hands.

And with faith—even if it is only the size of a mustard seed—I say:

“Father, I trust You with the rest of the story.”

In the name of Jesus Christ,

Amen.

Final Closing — The Garden Continues

Before we leave today, take one last look at our garden.

The echinacea.

The mustard.

The soil.

The new growth.

And remember where we began.

We planted tiny seeds without knowing exactly what would happen.

We watered them.

We tended them.

We waited.

And we trusted God with something we could never manufacture ourselves:

the growth.

That’s what I hope you carry from these 31 days.

You cannot force someone’s heart to change.

You cannot manufacture reconciliation.

You cannot recover yesterday.

You cannot control tomorrow.

But you can pray.

You can forgive.

You can remain tenderhearted.

You can speak truth in love.

You can leave the door open without standing in the doorway every day.

You can hope without demanding.

You can love without controlling.

And you can keep growing even while you wait.

So tomorrow morning, when there isn’t another devotional waiting for you, don’t think:

“The journey is over.”

Instead say:

“Today is Day 32—and God is still writing.”

Maybe one day you’ll look back and understand things you cannot understand today.

Maybe there will be new conversations.

New memories.

New growth.

Maybe some prayers will be answered differently than you imagined.

We don’t know.

But we know the One we’re entrusting them to.

So leave a blank page in your journal.

Leave room in your heart for God to surprise you.

And keep tending what He has placed in your care.

Plant the prayer.
Tend your heart.
Keep your hands open.
Keep growing forward.
And trust God with the rest of the story.

Thank you for spending these 31 days with me.

And one final time for this series…

may your roots grow deep,
and your spirit stay nourished.

God bless you.

And remember:

**The devotional may be finished…

but God is still writing the story.**
